The San Jose Jr. Sharks enjoyed a successful Wednesday afternoon with four 2005 AAA players getting selected in the Inaugural WHL U.S. Draft.

The Western Hockey League (WHL) hosted their very first U.S. only draft. This draft was started to aid in the risk that WHL teams have when drafting U.S. born players. Each team in the draft held 2 picks for a total of 44 selections. The WHL is allowed to draft players from the Western United States and also Minnesota.

Shaun Rios was the first Jr. Shark player to go, getting drafted #2 overall by the Tri-City Americans. The Americans are 1 of 5 teams located in the U.S. that compete in the WHL.

Philippe Blais-Savoie was the second name called at #7 by the Vancouver Giants. Current San Jose Shark Evander Kane laced up the skates for the Giants from 2006-2009.

Briggs Orr was selected by the Calgary Hitmen at number 34. Current San Jose Shark Martin Jones played for the Hitmen from 2006-2010.

Our last selection of the draft was Ben Picard at number 43, joining teammate Shaun Rios, selected by the Tri-City Americans. Notable alumni include Carey Price, Montreal, and Brandon Carlo, Boston Bruins.

Congratulations to all 4 players selected!

The WHL Bantam Draft will be help April 22. Players born in the U.S. are eligible for this draft as well.
