Volunteer Coaches

Coaching in the Jr Sharks House League

The Jr Sharks House League is always looking for volunteer coaches to help out on-ice with practices and head coaching of teams. If you, or someone you know, is interested in coaching in the JSHL alongside our Sharks Ice coaching staff, please review the requirements below and sign up within our Volunteer Coaching registration to get started.

JSHL TEAM COACHING PREREQUISITES CHECKLIST 2025-26


Coaching Prerequisites

Listed below are the five mandatory prerequisites to coach in the Jr Sharks House League:

1) USA Hockey Membership | Register with USA Hockey as a Coach for the 2025-2026 season | https://membership.usahockey.com

2) Sign Up To Coach In The JSHL | Please complete the JSHL Volunteer Coaching Registration so we have all your correct contact information and run your USA Hockey Membership number through their national registry | https://sjjrsharks.sportngin.com/register/form/700297889 or click on the button link at the bottom of this section.

3) USA Hockey National Background Screening | Be in compliance with the USA Hockey Background Screening policy which is valid for two seasons | https://www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen 

4) SafeSport Core Training | The SafeSport Core and Refresher Training are each valid for one season | https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining

5) CAHA Anti-Bullying & Inclusion Training | Mandated by the California Amateur Hockey Association, all coaches must complete the online training | CAHA AB&I Training Instructions

6) USA Hockey Age Specific Module | Complete the online Age Specific Module for the age division(s) you want to coach | https://www.usahockey.com/agespecificmodules

If you are unsure if you need to do your Background screening, SafeSport or Age Specific Modules, please make sure to complete the JSHL Volunteer Coaching Registration. We can run your USA Hockey Membership number through their national registry to check on what needs attention.

It is highly encouraged that coaches go through coaching certification with the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program. This is a requirement for coaches wanting to coach in NORCAL 8U Jamboree's and travel hockey | https://www.usahockey.com/coachingcertification


Student Coaching Regulations

A player between the ages of 13 and 17 who is currently properly registered with USA Hockey and a member of the Jr Sharks House League, the San Jose Jr Sharks, or the Sharks High School Hockey League, may serve as a student coach under the following conditions:

  • Must always be under the supervision of a screened adult coach during all practices, clinics, try-outs, and in the locker room. 
  • May help out on-ice at practices and clinics only. 
  • May not participate as a player in scrimmages or games when acting as a student coach. 
  • May not act as the head coach or an assistant coach during practices or games. 
  • May be on the bench during games with a screened adult. The student coach will count as one of the maximum of four team officials allowed on the bench. 
  • Must wear a helmet with full face shield, gloves, and skates while on the ice. Must wear helmet during games while on the bench. 
  • May only work with players at least one full playing age level down (e.g., a 14U age player may act as a student coach at the 12U, 10U or 8U level). 
  • Must register as a student coach with the JSHL (registration button link available above)
  • Must fill out the USA Hockey Student Coach Form (PDF document available below) which must be emailed to JSHL administrators.
  • Must attend a training session conducted by the Northern California Youth Hockey Association on Saturday, December 13th, 1-3:30pm at Sharks Ice at San Jose (https://norcalyouthhockey.org/news-story.php?id=352).
  • Will need to complete SafeSport if turning 18 during the year in which they are coaching.
  • Upon reaching the age of 18, the student coach must comply with the USA Hockey Screening Program and meet the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program requirements which will qualify him/her to act as an assistant or head coach.
