Jr Sharks Girls 2017-18 Coaches Announcement

The Jr Sharks are proud to announce the following head coaches for the girls’ 2017-18 season:

8U

Jim Henderson will be joining us as head coach of the girls 8U team. Jim coached the girls mini-mite team in the Jr Sharks House League for the 2016-17 season and is excited about being involved in the core development stage of our young players. He has a daughter who plays in the Jr Sharks program, and a son who plays in the Jr Sharks House League.

10U

Damien Grulick will be returning to our program as head coach for the girls 10U-1 team. Damien was head coach of the girls 10U-2 team for the 2016-17 season. He has 8 years of combined roller and ice hockey playing experience, works as a Solar4America Ice Staff Coach, provides private skating and hockey lessons and is currently majoring in Public Relations at San Jose State University with a minor in Sports Management.

The girls’ 10U-2 head coach is still to be determined.

12U

Marcel Mallais will be returning to our program as head coach of the girls 12U-1 team. Marcel has been coaching for 10 years, 3 of which are with the Jr Sharks. He was head coach of the girls 10U-1 team for the 2016-2017 season. He has 40 years of playing experience and has twin daughters who currently play in the Jr Sharks program.

Lance McAndrew will be joining us as head coach of the girls 12U-2 team. Originally from Alberta, Canada, Lance spent 8 years playing youth hockey and picked it back up again when he relocated to San Jose in his mid-twenties. He currently plays in the Sharks Ice Adult Hockey League and is looking forward to expanding his hockey experience through coaching.

14U

Mike Rathje & Amanda Long will be co-coaching the girls 14U-1 team. Mike has been coaching in the Jr Sharks program for the past 4 years. He has also coached in the Jr Sharks House League, as well as various hockey camps including the Sharks Pro Defense Camp and the Sharks Summer Hockey School. His playing career included Team Canada U16 Japan, World Junior Team Canada Sweden ’93, and 13 years in the National Hockey League, 9 of which were with the San Jose Sharks. Amanda has been coaching in the Jr Sharks program for 7 years and joined the program in 2016 as the Girls/Women’s Hockey Coordinator. Amanda has 24 years of combined roller and ice hockey playing experience, 3 of which were with the Jr Sharks and she currently plays for a women’s senior B National Bound team. She played college hockey for two years at Wayne State University (NCAA Div I) and completed her final two years at Lindenwood University (ACHA Div I).

The girls’ 14U-2 head coach is still to be determined.

16U, 19U, High School

Rick Burke & Amanda Long will be co-coaching the girls 16U team. Rick has been coaching for 13 years, 9 of which are with the Jr Sharks. His playing experience includes 40+ years, mites through College, and he currently plays in the Sharks Ice Adult Hockey League. He has been a huge advocate for girls hockey in the Bay Area and has been an integral part in getting new players to join the Jr Sharks program over the past 9 years. Rick has one daughter that will be graduating from the girls 19U team and another daughter who currently plays in the Jr Sharks program. Rick and Amanda were a coaching tandem for the Jr Sharks Girls 12U Tier 2 National Championship team in 2011.

Bobby Long will be returning as head coach of the girls 19U team. Bobby has been coaching for 19 years, 7 of which have been for the Jr Sharks. 20+ of the girls that he has coached in those 7 years have advanced on to play college hockey from the NCAA Division I & III level to ACHA Division I & II. He has 14 years of youth playing experience, mites through midgets at Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Association along with an additional 4 years with the Blazers at the midget AAA level and has 25+ years of experience officiating. Bobby was head coach of the Jr Sharks Girls 19U Tier 2 National Championship team this past season and is looking to carry the team to another championship title this upcoming season.

Steve Coates will be returning as head coach of the girls High School team. Steve was head coach of the girls 14U-2 team for the 2016-2017 season. Originally from New York, Steve has 30+ years of playing experience, from youth to college and adult, as well as 2 years of officiating experience. He has been coaching for the past 6 years in the Jr Sharks House League and the Jr Sharks program. Steve is excited about continuing to instill and sustain a passion for hockey for the older players in our program.

We are looking forward to another fun and successful season of Jr Sharks hockey. We will provide an update regarding the girls 10U-2 and 14U-2 coaches no later than May 15th.
