San Jose Jr. Sharks Squirt 2007-1 Win Silver Stick International Tournament

The San Jose Jr. Sharks made their way up north to Pelham, Ontario over the weekend to compete in the 2017 Silver Stick international tournament.

Day 1: The team started off the tournament by playing the Oakridge Aeros. After a slow start, the team fought hard to try to close the 3 goal gap but could not mustard any offense up and ended up losing the game 3-0. The team did not have much time to think about the lost because they had to play another game that afternoon against the Chicago Hawks. The Jr. Sharks came out flying in the first and managed to put 3 goals on the board early on. With a group effort and great goaltending, the team was able to shut down the hawk’s offense and come out with a 6-0 win. The day had just begun for this group of kids as they finished off the evening with the annual opening ceremony which consisted of an introduction of all the teams as well as the famous pin trading.

Day 2: The team looked to build off their win in game 2 to move onto the quarter finals. The Jr. Sharks were successful in pushing the pace and creating opportunities in the offensive zone. Capitalizing on some great offensive zone chances, the Jr. Sharks were able to defeat the Tillsonburg Tornadoes 6 to 1 and move into the quarter finals that day where they would face the Collingwood Blackhawks. During the quarterfinal game, the Jr. Sharks moved past the Blackhawks 3 to 0 setting up a semifinal game against the Whitby Wildcats.

Day 3: A battle between two great teams gave everyone all they could ask for and more. After taking an early lead in the first, the Whitby Wildcats responded by capitalizing on a breakaway goal to tie the game. A back and forth game saw the Jr. Sharks climbing back from being down 1 goal 3 different times. Down 4 to 3 with 1:30 left in the 3rd period, the team pulled their goal to get an extra attacker on the ice. With a neutral zone faceoff win, the Jr. Sharks were able to advance the puck into the offensive zone with about 50 seconds left and score! The game then went into overtime and while being down a man, the team was able to get a shorthanded goal and move on to the championship game! Before the big game the next day, the boys got together with the host team, Pelham Panthers, for a little scrimmage and dinner after. Kids were able to hang out with each other and learn a few things about how Canadians do some things differently such as their providence vs. states and that milk comes in a plastic bag versus a cart like here!

Day 4: The championship game against the Lincoln Jr. Stars featured an all American team showdown. The teams were scoreless after the end of the first period. The Jr. Sharks got on the board early in the 2nd off a rebound and didn’t look back. Scoring a 2nd goal with about 40 seconds left in the 2nd, this proved to be enough for the Jr. Sharks win. They locked down in the defensive zone and were able to come out victorious 2 to 0! An impressive 5-0-1 during the tournament with 3 shutout games had lots of smiles from the team.

The team looks to continue their success in the NORCAL regular season and into the playoffs
