Two Tournaments and Six Colleges in Eleven Days

The Jr Sharks Girls 19U team returned this past Sunday from an 11 day road trip, which included two tournaments and a four day college tour. The trip began in Detroit, MI, where the girls attended the Two Nations College Prep Series. There they finished with a 3-2-0 record against teams from Canada, Michigan & New Jersey. From there they flew to New York where they began their college tour.

Day 1 the girls toured Utica College (NCAA D3) where the coach showed them around the hockey facilities, discussed daily life as a college hockey player and answered questions regarding recruiting and admissions. Following Utica, the girls stopped at Hamilton College (NCAA D3) where they toured the facilities and campus, and had an opportunity to meet some of the players and enjoy a lunch in the main dining hall.

Day 2 they went to SUNY Cortland (NCAA D3) where they were greeted by Jr Sharks Girls alumna, Eva Kristof. Kristof is now a sophomore at Cortland. She spoke of her experience as a college hockey player and the process she took to get there, as well as showed them around the athletic facilities. Their next stop was Hobart & William Smith College. They started off with practice at “The Cooler,” home of the Hobart & William Smith ice hockey teams, then got to tour the dorms and campus following a discussion with the Head Women’s Ice Hockey Coach.

Day 3 started off with practice at SUNY Oswego (NCAA D3) where they were greeted by yet another Jr Sharks Girls alumna, Laura Thacker. After practice they toured the facilities and enjoyed another lunch in the campus dining hall and began the final leg of their trip up to Rochester.

Day 4 was the final day of the college tour where they got to visit RIT (NCAA D1). The girls had an opportunity to watch a practice, see the facilities and meet the coaches, one of which is Jr Sharks Boys alumnus, Shane Madolora.

For the final portion of the trip the girls attended the Rochester Fire On Ice Tournament. The girls competed hard with a 2-1-0 record in round robin play, advanced with a strong showing in the quarter finals and ultimately fell short in the semi-final game ending with a 3-2-0 record overall.

In review, the trip was a great success. With the variety of schools visited, there was something different that each player found interest in. The girls learned a lot about what the coaches might look for while they are recruiting, how the process works with admissions and athletics and got to experience a little bit of daily life as a college athlete.
