Cody Chiverton was named an Assistant Captain for this years Granite City Lumberjacks Jr A (MNJHL) hockey team located in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. This is Cody’s second year with the Lumberjacks.
For Cody this has been a dream come true. He is from SW Oregon in a small town called Selma, about 20 miles form the California border. From the age of 5 years old, Cody travelled 3 hrs a day, up to 4 days per week to play hockey at the Rink in Medford, Oregon. He progressed from the learn to play hockey program, to the Jr Summits program and then spent 1 year in the High School Hockey league in Southern Oregon.
Cody had always wanted to play in a more competitive hockey program, and in his sophomore year, he tried out for the San Jose Jr Sharks 16 AA program and was selected. Making the jump from a small house league to a Tier program was challenging. He started out on the fourth line, but through hard work and determination became a starter on the second line. In his junior year of high school, he was selected for the 18 AA program with the Sharks. These two years of competitive hockey in San Jose were the spark that helped Cody further develop into a skilled player.
In the Fall of 2010, he was selected by the Granite City Lumberjacks during a tryout for another team. Their staff liked what they saw and sent him an e mail asking him to play for them. One of Cody’s goals was to play in Minnesota, and now he was getting that opportunity. The road during his first year was challenging and often difficult. The Lumberjacks had a team that was very skilled and fast. Cody’s jump from AA hockey to this level required a lot of hard work, dedication, patience through obstacles ranging from injuries, wisdom teeth, and experienced players that were older. Cody never waivered in his determination, accepting each challenge with maturity and determination.
This year, his attitude, work ethic, and skill development paid off in his selection as an Assistant Captain for the Lumberjacks, who also joined the NA3HL hockey league.
